CROSSINGS

Why do historians, archaeologists, primatologists, art historians, museologists, anthropologists, etc. study artifacts?

Because they are connected to human existence and have inexhaustible value in our encounter with ourselves and others. Our ability to see and understand the world is inseparable from what connects us to the complexity and meaning of objects.

Each of the FemLink-Art artists explores the notion of human existence through their selection of artifacts.

Concept

1. The artists choose objects for their symbolic value related to human existence.

2. The objects are connected to each other. They cross the image from side to side on different types of ground (grass, sand, road, snow, leaves, tiles, floorboards, etc.)

3. The images are cut into narrow "strips" that only reveal the objects dragged on the ground.

4. The "strips" of images from the artists are grouped according to the types of ground crossed by the objects.

5. Depending on the equipment: projection on 1-2-3 or 4 walls and the ceiling (as many projectors as walls + the ceiling)

Principle

The objects: These can be everyday objects, elements of nature, artistic creations, etc. They can be full of history, memories, emotions, reflections, etc.

The movement of objects: The way they move depends on their weight, their materials, their center of gravity, the object that precedes them, and the one that follows them. The way and materials with which they are connected are used by artists as symbolic supports.

The landscapes crossed by these objects are varied: from the sand of the desert to the eternal snow, from the mud of agricultural land to the asphalt of cities, to the skin of a back, etc.

The constant movement of the strips evokes the impermanence of existence, transitions, and transformations. The artifacts cover the entire image as they occupy the entire planet.

Statement

Artifacts are carriers of meaning, witnesses of our humanity, and symbols of our existence. They allow us to understand ourselves, to situate ourselves in time and space, and to connect with others and the world around us.

As symbolic mediators, they contribute to the establishment of major psychological functions: the "self" is constructed through the integration of norms conveyed by the world of objects, both through their use, manipulation, and the behaviors they impose. For example, the possession of an object is a significant act that demonstrates social stratification, symbolic hierarchies, etc.

Over the past sixty years, humans have changed the world they live in more than ever before. Artifacts represent the imprint that humanity leaves behind and its dramatic consequences on natural environments and life in general. From now on, they represent threats to our survival and that of other species.

A Visual and Emotional Choreography

"Traversées" is a visual and emotional choreography. Like life in constant evolution, objects approach, intersect, and move away, their trajectories respond to each other, creating a silent dialogue between experiences and sensibilities.

The public is invited to move around the space to discover all facets of the installation and create their own narrative journey.
